Overview

This program offers undergraduate scholarships, each for up to $10,000 per year for a two-year period.  

This scholarship provides a springboard to a commercial or graduate path to work in the nuclear industry. Scholars are required to participate in Undergraduate Certificate coursework, where they learn about fundamental physics and operational response of reactor and plant systems, plant control, and nuclear safety.  

In this scholarship program, scholars' experience goes beyond the classroom to expose them to the nuclear industry and to provide valuable experience in nuclear science and engineering.  Scholars will learn about the industry trends, the development of cutting edge improvements, and research in nuclear science and engineering.  Scholars earn more than a certificate---they become valuable and knowledgeable contributors to the nuclear industry.

To this end, and in addition to earning the Nuclear Engineering certificate, Pitt Nuclear Engineering Scholars will do two (2) things:  

  1. They must participate annually in a Nuclear Engineering Industry Symposium, and
  2. they must participate in an experiential learning opportunity in nuclear engineering.

This will put scholars on a commercial or graduate studies path to better support the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities as leading contributors within the nuclear enterprise.   

The two (2) facets of this program are outlined in what follows.

  1. Nuclear Engineering Industry Symposium 

    Annually, we will hold a Nuclear Engineering Industry Symposium for Pitt Nuclear Engineering Scholars.  At this event, industry leaders will be engaged to address technological, techno-economic and operational issues that are vital to the nuclear enterprise.  This will provide students with an understanding of key industry elements such as: technology application to enhance defense in depth; nuclear safety culture and human performance priorities necessary in operations; and realization of safety, productivity, efficiency and commercial viability in practice.

    This event is intended to be interactive between scholars and industry participant.  The Symposium will give scholars a more intimate and directed exposure to the nuclear industry, and will show scholars the opportunities in the nuclear enterprise.

  2. Experiential Learning Opportunities in Nuclear Engineering

    This aims to help scholars gain valuable experience outside the classroom in nuclear related work experience, research experience, or international experience.  This experience must be equivalent to at least one (1) semester of work, research, or international experience.  These activities will not be prescribed on the scholar; rather, we will work with the scholar to find an experience that meets their career goals and aspirations.  Here are some examples:

    • Work experience in the nuclear industry:  In the past decade, Pitt co-op and intern students have participated in industry projects in nuclear fuel cycle design, HTGR hydrogen generation, fusion power conversion cycles, fuel manufacturing system improvement, and others.  This scholarship program can help place scholars in nuclear engineering co-ops and internships. The scholar will gain awareness of industrial priorities for nuclear.  With the community of plant vendors, marine propulsion support, spent fuel product manufacturers, national laboratories, other universities and utilities, opportunities will be provided to acquire familiarity and expertise in nuclear technology applications and operations.

      Pitt Nuclear Engineering Scholars selecting this option would be expected to have participated for at least one (1) semester in a co-op rotation or internship with an approved nuclear employer. 

    • Undergraduate research in nuclear engineering:  Pitt has an expanding group of faculty conducting research in nuclear engineering.  For those scholars interested in research and graduate education, we will help them find undergraduate research opportunities in the fields of nuclear science and engineering.  To date, many of our students have conducted undergraduate research in nuclear materials, thermal-hydraulics, and nuclear instrumentation and controls.  Students will be able to earn 3 CH of technical elective credit through a Special Project course that involves investigation and research embodying testing, original design, or research on an approved nuclear subject.
    • International experiences in nuclear power:  Pitt's Nuclear Engineering program offers a two-week, 3-CH study-abroad course titled `French Nuclear Power.'  In this course students from diverse schools are able to experience a national program that covers nuclear power and fuel cycle at the locations in France where its component activities are conducted, and explained by the experts involved.  In this experiential learning opportunity, the scholar receives a global and complete view of nuclear power and the fuel cycle, and benefits from international experience and exposure that aids in identifying preferred areas of future concentration within nuclear engineering. If the scholar chooses, scholarship funding can be used to participate in this valuable experience.

Selection Criteria and Requirements

The Nuclear Engineering Scholarship recipients will be selected using the following criteria and requirements are:

  • Have and maintain better than 3.0 GPA (4.0 scale) overall and in major.
  • Maintain a course load of at least 12 CH per semester or be classified as a full-time student, in accordance with Pitt’s policies and procedures.
  • Be matriculated in a baccalaureate degree program in engineering.
  • Commit to earning the undergraduate Certificate in Nuclear Engineering.
  • Agree to the NRC’s terms for this program, including a commitment to serve six (6) months in nuclear-related employment for each partial or full year of support.
