Industrial Engineering

The Co-op Program for Industrial Engineers:

• Industrial engineers can start a co-op as early as the summer after their sophomore year. Students complete three alternating rotations and can gain three credits towards a technical elective, provided that the required technical paper is submitted to the department at the end of three rotations.

• Students with industrial engineering knowledge can gain co-op experience in many industries, including but not limited to consulting, manufacturing, supply chain, and operations.

Department Information:
The co-op faculty advisor for Industrial Engineering is Dr. Karen Bursic. She can advise and approve co-op schedules for undergraduates in the IE department. Schedule options and co-op paper requirements can be found on the IE website.

What IE students are saying about their co-ops:

“I am [still] very happy that I chose to participate in the co-op program. I continue to learn so many topics that would have otherwise passed by me and I feel that my co-op has definitely helped me have a better idea of what working will be like after graduation.”

- Stephanie Small, Curtiss-Wright EMD, Inc.

“I am enjoying this co-op experience very much and appreciate everything you do to make such experiences possible for Pitt students. This is an amazing opportunity to supplement classroom learning, to develop career goals, and to meet a company and its employees .”

- Rebecca Terry, LMI

“This coop has developed my professionalism because Walt Disney World holds coops at a very high standard, with great expectations. This pushed me to go above and beyond to meet and exceed these expectations. There is also so much opportunity to work with many types of people and departments which helped to expose me to different areas that Industrial Engineers can be a part of. This assignment has definitely made me think more in depth about where I want to end up and what I want to be doing.”

- Jenna Gilbreath, Walt Disney World

“A lot of assignments required that I communicate with other people throughout the company, which helped me learn how to handle professional situations with colleagues. I feel that I have a good understanding of how to communicate in a professional manner and still be personable.”

- Eamon Drury, Mine Safety Appliances Co.

“….I was definitely given more difficult assignments and I’m excited about that. The fact that I have been given more responsibilities as time has gone on has showed me that I am able to contribute to this company in some way, shape or form and that is a good feeling….”

- Jeffrey Coull, FedEx Ground
