Civil and Environmental Engineering

“I completed three co-op rotations with the corporate engineering group at GES in the Philadelphia area. It was a great way to spend time in an unfamiliar city while gaining valuable real-world job experience, which led to an opportunity for post-graduation employment. Upon graduation GES offered me a position in their Fort Lauderdale office. I was already familiar with company policies and technologies which made my transition to a full-time engineer smooth for me and GES. ”

The Co-op Program for Civil & Environmental Engineers:

• Civil and environmental engineers can start a co-op as early as the summer after their sophomore year. Students complete three alternating rotations and can gain three credits towards a CEE elective, provided that a technical paper is submitted to the department and a poster board presentation is completed at the end of three rotations. More information on the requirements can be found through the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
• Students with civil engineering knowledge can gain co-op experience in many industries, including but not limited to: construction, environmental, structural, and transportation.

Department Information:

The co-op faculty advisor is Dr. Leonard Casson, who provides approval for co-op schedules (see preapproved schedules and summer course offerings) for undergraduates in the CEE department.

What CEE students are saying about their co-ops:

“It gave me various viewpoints of a large range of different projects. I was able to see so many disciplines related to my major being acted out on a variety of projects. It has influenced my future goals somewhat since it showed me a large number of possible ways to apply my future engineering degree.”

- Robert Durso, Tetra Tech NUS, Inc.

“This assignment helped me to see the real life application of civil engineering, and taught me how to function in a stressful, professional work area. It has helped me in picking a career, and I am much more open to heavy construction after this assignment.”

- Stephen Bosela, Kiewit Constructors

“It’s going great. I’m doing real work that actually matters, not busy work. It’s a good type of challenge, and it keeps me busy.”
