George Stetten earned an A.B. in Engineering and Applied Physics from Harvard in 1976, an M.S. in Biology from NYU in 1986, an M.D. from the SUNY Syracuse in 1991, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from UNC, Chapel Hill in 1999. Dr. Stetten wrote the software for the first computer system on board Deep Submersible Alvin at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, designed a telemetric egg to study incubation of endangered birds at the Bronx Zoo that was nominated for the 1992 Discover Magazine Award for Technological Innovation. He conducted the first full-scale classroom in which laptop computers were networked wirelessly in 1994, helped develop the first Real-Time 3D ultrasound scanner at Duke University, was a founding contributor to the National Library of Medicine Insight Toolkit for image analysis, and invented the "sonic flashlight," a device for image-guided medical procedures. He has been awarded a K08, three R01s, and an R21 from NIH, three contracts from the National Library of Medicine, as well as grants from the NSF and the Whitaker Foundation. He received the 2004 Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award in the Junior Scholar category from the University of Pittsburgh, the 2011-2012 Board of Visitors Faculty Award from the School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, and is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He is also a Research Professor at the Robotics Institute at CMU and formerly held the title of William Kepler Whiteford Professor in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He also has courtesy appointments in Radiology at the University of Pittsburgh and Biomedical Engineering at CMU. He served as Co-Director of the CMU/Pitt Medical Scientist Training Program from 2007-2011. He directs the Visualization and Image Analysis (VIA) Laboratory.
