For Credit

1. First, take the initiative to introduce yourself to a professor and express an interest in research. Bring along a 1-page resume and an unofficial transcript.
2. If the professor agrees, register for ChE 1097 or PetE 1097. You can register for 1-12 credits. Each credit requires 3 hours of time each week for 14 weeks.
3. Complete the  Research Experience for Academic Credit form, have your advisor sign the form, and then submit the form to the Academic Administrator.
4. Go to www.hsconnect.pitt.edu  , create your Pitt account and then go to step 5
5. Go to www.citi.pitt.edu, click login, and enter your HSConnect account information
6. Click on add a course
7. Choose your courses then click the submit button  (Answer all the questions, you would only answer yes to Responsible Conduct of Research for this assignment)
8. Follow the directions and print the completion certificate when you are finished and send to the Academic Administrator
9. Every 3 credits of ChE 1097 can be counted as a Professional or ChE Elective
10. This is a letter-grade course, and the professor has the ability to assign the appropriate grade (A - F) for your work.
11. Your advisor MUST have periodic meetings with you during the term AND your advisor must provide a project that has substantial intellectual content (you CANNOT be assigned to routine lab maintenance).
12. You MUST provide the Academic Administrator a copy of either a report on your topic OR a technical paper or draft of a paper in which you are listed as a co-author. You CANNOT receive a grade for your work - even with your advisor's approval - without handing in this document

For Pay

1. First, take the initiative to introduce yourself to a professor and express an interest in research. Bring along a 1-page resume and an unofficial transcript.
2. If the professor agrees, ask the professor how much you will be paid and how many hours per week you expect to work.
3. You MUST inform the Administrator II of this decision and fill out the proper papers, otherwise you will not be able to receive a paycheck.
4. Your advisor MUST have periodic meetings with you during the term, or assign a graduate student or post-doc to supervise you.

No double-dipping!

You CANNOT receive pay AND credit for the same time spent on a project. It is one or the other.
